FIBA confirmed the development at the association’s awards ceremony held in Manilla, Philippines, on Wednesday, revealing Uganda was the second most improved team (Girls) between 2021 – 2023.
The news of the world basketball governing body, the Federation of the Uganda Basketball Association (FIBA), recognising Uganda as the second most improved team for girls basketball has been well received in Uganda.
FIBA confirmed the development at the association’s awards ceremony held in Manilla, Philippines, on Wednesday, revealing Uganda was the second most improved team (Girls) between 2021 – 2023.
Slovenia took the top spot, while Portugal, Tanzania and Samoa shared third position.
Many Ugandans, including officials from the local basketball governing body FUBA, fans and the Gazelles players reacted to the good news.

The Gazelle's head coach, Alberto Antuna, also appreciated the recognition.
“Honored that this family – team – Federation has received the award of being the second-best improved team in the world in the FIBA World Ranking from the last year and a half,” he tweeted.
“Reason for basketball in Uganda to continue betting on this unique human group.
Alberto Antuna led the Gazelles to a 7th place finish, their best at the Women’s Afrobasket tournament in Kigali, Rwanda, picking up three wins in the process, including against African giants Senegal.
The Junior Gazelles are 4th in Africa and 40th in the world, having climbed 17 places.
