Uganda’s hopes of making the FIBA Women’s Afrobasket 2023 semi-finals vanished Wednesday night following a 66-61 loss to Rwanda in the quarters.

The Gazelles made history by qualifying for the FIBA Women’s Afrobasket quarter-finals on Tuesday night and had eyes on progressing to the semis against rivals and neighbours Rwanda.

But despite a solid start to the game in the first quarter, Uganda collapsed in the second and third frames to fall and drop into the classification games category.

However, even in defeat, there were top performances from some of Uganda’s players on the night.

Jannon Otto continued to show her offensive prowess with a staggering game-high 31 points and also pulled down 13 rebounds.

She dished out four assists and added five blocks to end the game as the most efficient player.

Uganda’s offence was static in the second and third quarters and contributed to the defeat as Rwanda smelt blood and went on to grab the win.

Apart from Otto, Melissa Akullu was the only other Ugandan to score in double figures on the night. She scored 16 points and added 13 rebounds for a double-double display.

Jane Asinde and Claire Lamunu, with six points apiece, were Uganda’s next big contributors offensively, while Priscilla Abby contributed two points.

Flavia Oketcho, Lydia Babirye, Hope Akello and Brenda Ekone all finished the game with no single point on a night Uganda shot one-for-19 from beyond the arc.

Uganda will now focus on fighting for position five in the classification games that start on Thursday.
