Chris Juma: Form Two student causes biggest upset in Kenya Open Boxing championship
Africa Zone Three Bantamweight Gold Medallist Shaffi Bakari faced an unexpected defeat at the hands of a 16-year-old Form Two student in a quarter-final clash on Thursday.
Maugo's victory was attributed to a calm and calculated approach, advice he credited to his coach and wife.
"My coach, who is my wife, told me to be calm in the ring. I have fulfilled that. If I meet Mandonga anywhere, I will still beat him again," Maugo stated confidently after the fight.

BOXING Edwin Okong'o promoted in Kenya Air Force after historic victory in African Games
Kenya's Edwin Okong'o was promoted after winning gold in boxing at the African Games, marking a historic victory for the country.
On the other side, Mandonga's camp downplayed the loss hinting a rematch between the two Tanzanian fighters.
"Maugo can't bother me; it's just a game. He doesn't have the ability to take me on canvas," he retorted.
However, this setback raises questions about Mandonga's future in the sport, especially considering his recent ban from participating in fights pending a comprehensive health evaluation at Muhimbili National Hospital.
The concern stemmed from Mandonga's aggressive fight schedule, having entered the ring nine times in just 11 months.
Mandonga, known for his charisma and theatrics outside the ring, became a fan favorite after defeating Kenya's Daniel Wanyonyi via a technical knockout in a non-title super middleweight fight at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on January 12, 2023.
His antics and the unusual practice of naming his fists—'Sugunyo' for the right and 'Kinguki' for the left—have contributed to his persona as much as his performances in the ring.
