Boxing Federation of Kenya will be among the beneficiaries of a big annual grant from Africa Boxing Confederation starting next year

Boxing Federation of Kenya (BFK) will be among beneficiaries of an annual grant of over Ksh7 million from Africa Boxing Confederation (AFBC).

AFBC President Eyassu Wossen Berhanu has promised that from next year, each of its 50-member federations will be receiving an annual grant of $50,000 (Ksh7,776,100) from the International Boxing Association (IBA).

Berhanu made the announcement in Conakry, Guinea on Saturday ahead of Boxing for Africa contest, saying the grant is in line with his manifesto in which he had promised to financially empower all the national federations affiliated to AFBC.

"This is just the beginning of my development plan, I held a fruitful meeting with IBA President Umar Kremlev in Dubai and he's committed to support us," said Berhanu.

"Before, people did not want boxing to develop in Africa but I'm committed to take the sport to the next level, that's why I decided to head the African body. We must therefore unite to move forward and avoid divisions. We're one Africa."

The grant will be a big boost to BFK who have struggled for years to honour and prepare for various events due to financial challenges.

A number of boxers have also missed out on key events while some league bouts have been skipped owing to a shortage of cash. There are also some pugilists still waiting to be paid their dues, having featured in various international assignments in recent years.

While in Conakry, Berhanu also donated boxing equipment to the Guinea Boxing Federation, and assured all affiliates they will get their share because he knows lack of equipment is a big challenge to most of the national federations in Africa.
