BOXING Erinah Namutebi smashes Mozambique boxer to reach Africa Boxing finale, Emily Nakalema settles for bronze

Erinah Namutebi has defeated Mulongo Sandra of Mozambique to reach the Africa Elite Men's and Women's Boxing Championships light welterweight grand finale.

In the other bout, She Bombers captain Emily Nakalema lost her welterweight semi-final to Gomes Ivanusa of Cape Verde.

Namutebi became the second Uganda boxer to reach the grand finale at the championships in Cameroon.

Fresh and well-rested, the 2023 national open champion opened her campaign in style as she proved too strong for Mulongo to handle.

The semi-final bout was only her first engagement at the championships after she earned a bye to the medal brackets in the draws.

Namutebi's flurry of strong jabs and punches overwhelmed her opponent. The Uganda People's Defense Force (UPDF) boxer was declared the winner by Referee Stops Contest to avoid further damage to her opponent.

UPDF boxer Namutebi will aiming for Africa gold medal in Cameroon.

Namutebi will either walk away with a gold or silver medal in the grand finale of the women's light welterweight category. Significantly, she will pocket either Shs36m (silver) or Shs54m (gold).

She joins Wasswa Ssali, the other Bomber who has made it to the grand finale at the championships.

On the other hand, Nakalema was out-pointed by Ivanusa in the welterweight semi-final. She will return home with a bronze.

Solomon Geko will face Zacharie Amougou of Cameroon in the Heavyweight semi-finals.
