BOXING How much Ugandan boxers pocketed at the African Boxing Championships

Seven members of the Uganda Boxing national team, the Bombers walked home with medals at the continental showpiece.

Uganda enjoyed a successful showing at the 2023 African Elite Men's and Women's Boxing Championships in Yaounde, Cameroon.

This was the most ever by Uganda in a single Africa Boxing Championship, as it was only two in the previous edition.

Meanwhile in Cameroon, lightweight boxer Wasswa Ssali Amir alias Black skin clinched silver after defeat to South Africa’s Sogwayi Sanele in the final on Saturday, but pocketed $10,000 (about Shs 37m).

The case was the same for light Welterweight female boxer Erina Namutebi, who won silver following her defeat to Algeria’s Chahib Hichrak in the women's final bout, subsequently pocketing 36 million Uganda shillings.

The bronze medalists included welterweight boxer Ukasha Matovu, Ronald Okello(lightweight), Solomon Geko (heavyweight), Grace Nankinga and Lady’s captain Emily Nakalema.

Each of the quintet smiled home to $5,000, which is an equivalent of close to 18 million Uganda shillings.

On the other hand, quarterfinalists Muzamir Ssemuddu, James Baraka, Lawrence Kayiwa and Sharua Ndagire scooped $1,250 (about Shs 4.5 million).
