BOXING UBF president Moses Muhangi resigns as team manager amid row with UOC over selection criteria for Bombers’ Olympic qualifying squad
In a letter dated 23rd August to the Uganda Olympic Committee, the Uganda Boxing Federation president protested UOC’s inclusion of boxers Shadir Musa Bwogi and David Ssemujju, who he says didn’t go through the proper selection criteria to make the Bombers qualifiers team.
However, the Naguru pugilist is again relishing the opportunity to represent Uganda on the biggest stage.
“It’s an excellent opportunity for me to represent Uganda once again at the Olympics.
I have earned it and jumped at the opportunity when UOC approached me about it,” Bwogi told Pulse Sports in an exclusive interview.
“I am not interested in politicking because whatever is happening is God’s plan, which can’t be stopped anyway. I have had pro fights and am in the right shape for the qualifiers in Senegal.”
Bwogi, who captained the Bombers at the Tokyo Olympics, including Catherine Nanziri and David Ssemujju, was eliminated by Georgia’s Eskerkhan Madiev in the round of 16, losing 3-1.
After that, he ventured into professional boxing after falling out with UBF over “unfair” boxing Champions League contracts in 2021.
Bwogi has since gone on to have five professional bouts, winning all of them, while David Ssemujju has gone on to have four bouts and won them all, too.
The Bombers are expected to compete at the upcoming continental Olympic qualifier between 9th – 15th September in Dakar, Senegal.
It remains to be seen how the impasse between the UBF and UOC will be resolved, with President Moses Muhangi stepping down from his team manager role a few weeks before the qualifiers.
