Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has exonerated himself from blame over the current health problems of veteran boxer Conjestina Achieng while blaming her family for ‘negligence’.

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has distanced himself from the health issues currently bedeviling former boxer Conjestina Achieng.

Conjestina, who was taken to a Mombasa hospital for treatment in July 2022 before being discharged in June last year courtesy of Sonko, is reported to have slipped back to her mental problems at her home in Siaya county.

Media personality Carol Radull shared the condition of ‘Conje’ when she visited her in Siaya, saying the boxer is not doing well, months after she was given a clean bill of health.

That raised questions over what happened after the treatment she received at the Mombasa Women Empowerment Network Hospital and the promise of a job by Sonko who had vowed to ensure she does not return to Siaya.

“I have seen a post by my good friend Carol Radull on Conjee, which attracted both positive and negative reactions from the public,” Sonko posted on social media.

“Others were criticising and accusing me of playing PR and vipindiree. I hereby wish to respond with facts as hereunder: Kenyans, I did my best to help Conjee, but her family watered down my efforts.

“Fortunately, my heart is bigger than myself. At times, I fail to control it for the love I have for the people, especially the less fortunate, and I think this is the reason I initially gave Conjee the first, second, and now may be I will be forced to give a third and final chance again coz [because] I'm always serious with all the cases we undertake and since we always document and account for the progress of all our sensitive cases.”

Sonko pointed a finger of blame at the boxer’s family whom he accuses of resting on their laurels and allowing her to slip back into her mental problems.

When she left hospital last June, Sonko said she would now work as the gym instructor and head of security at Mombasa’s Salama Bling Beach resort and would not be allowed to go back to Siaya unless on a family visit and under strict supervision.

However, Radull painted a different picture of the struggling boxer this week.

“On 2nd Jan I visited my friend Conjestina Achieng in her shags in Yala. She's been there about 2 months and is back to her same lifestyle. She has good days and bad days,” Radull posted on X (formerly Twitter).

“When I arrived, she was having a bad day but her face lit up when she saw me and we chatted for a long time as best we could. I tried with my layman ability to gently encourage her to "clean up her act".

“Many have tried to help her but none of us have succeeded in a long-term solution to her predicament. I concede it's out of my capability.”

Conje has been in and out of hospital since she was diagnosed with Schizoaffective, a mental health disorder, in 2011.
