Kenya managed to bag seven bronze medals at the just-concluded continental event.

The Africa Boxing Championships concluded in Yaoundé, Cameroon with the national team, Hit Squad, having bagged seven bronze medals and finished 17th overall at the event.

Robert Okaka, David Karanja, Peter Abuti, Amina Martha, Shaffi Bakari, Elizabeth Adiego, and Christine Ongare were the pugilists who impressively punched their way to the podium.

After the disappointing outing, Team Kenya has now shifted focus to next year’s Paris Olympics. They will be headed to the Africa qualifiers scheduled for September 9 to 15 in Dakar, Senegal.

Head coach Benjamin Musa expressed his disappointment towards the team’s failure to bag gold but revealed that they will now be forging forward.

“We have been disappointed because we were targeting gold but we didn’t get any. We wanted to have at least three of four gold medallists but due to unavoidable circumstances we were not able to achieve that,” Juma told KBC Sport.

On her part, team captain Elizabeth Andiego lauded the team for their efforts and noted that their focus is now on the Olympic Qualifiers.

“We did our best and we are happy we bagged the bronze medals and didn’t come out empty-handed. We believe we can do much better and we now just have to go back to the drawing board. Our focus now shifts to the Olympic qualifiers.

"We have very little time to hone our skills but we believe we can do it. We want to rectify the mistakes we made in Cameroon and that way, we shall be good to go,” she said.
