The Hit Squad was hoping to make an impression at the African Paris 2024 Olympics Boxing qualifiers but they left empty-handed.

The national boxing team, Hit Squad, left the African Paris 2024 Olympics Boxing qualifiers in Dakar, Senegal empty-handed after failing to secure a top spot for the Olympic Games.

Team Kenya had been to Cuba for a training camp to sharpen their talons but they did not live up to the billing in Dakar.

All hopes rested on Elizabeth Andiego after all the other pugilists had been knocked out but the pressure was too much for her to bear. She was beaten by Moroccan world champion Khadija Mardi who, with her prowess, qualified for the Paris Olympics.

Andiego went into the bout optimistic of a win over the Moroccan but Mardi was too skilled for the Kenyan. She piled on points from a distance with neat jabs, occasional right crosses, and right uppercuts delivered with clinical efficiency.

After Team Kenya’s unsatisfactory show from the continental showpiece, the National Olympic Committee of Kenya will have to submit their requests to the International Olympic Committee stating why they want their athlete considered for one of the nine Universality places.

But before then, Team Kenya has to go back to the drawing board and examine what went wrong. After having the training in Cuba, it was Kenya’s hope that the pugilists would make the cut to the global showpiece without much struggle.

However, the case was very different and they showed their inexperience in the ring, something that remains puzzling. Could it be the lack of experience that was Hit Squad's major undoing?
