Edo state emerge winner of the National Women's Cricket Championship

Edo won against Akwa Ibom by 89 runs on Sunday to emerge the national champions.

Edo state has clinched the 2024 Nigeria Cricket Federation's National Women's Championship title after a dominant victory over Akwa Ibom.

Edo defeated Akwa Ibom by 89 runs to emerge winners on Sunday.

Edo captain, Favour Eseigbe, expressed her pride in the team's achievement.

"I'm proud of the team's achievement and all members gave their best for us to emerge champion," she said.

Peace Usen, the Player of the Match, was instrumental in the victory with a stunning bowling performance, taking five wickets for just six runs in four overs.

"We have a compact team and I'm proud of what we have achieved," Eseigbe said.

Akwa Ibom, who won the toss and opted to field first, were unable to contain Edo's batting prowess.

Igbinedion Victory led the charge with a solid 40 runs from 54 balls, while Piety Lucky contributed 36 runs from 23 balls. Edo's innings ended with a respectable total of 128 runs.

In the second innings, Edo's bowlers were relentless, dismissing Akwa Ibom for a mere 39 runs in just 12 overs.

Meanwhile, Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) President, Uyi Akpata, praised the quality of cricket displayed throughout the tournament,

"It's been seven days of quality cricket and a showcase of cricket skills by girls from all the six geo-political zones of the country. We had Gombe, Kaduna, Kogi, Ekiti, Lagos, Anambra, Akwa Ibom and Edo States," he said.

Akpata also highlighted the importance of the Women's Cricket Initiative launched during the week.

"We are turbocharging our girl-child including in sports and laying a solid foundation for the future of cricket and the Nigerian girls," he added.

The 2024 National Women's Championship, which commenced on Tuesday, October 22nd, concluded on Sunday, October 27th.
