The Uganda Cricket Association is currently enduring one of its most arduous periods, as several key personnel have abruptly resigned from their prominent positions within the past 72 hours.

Once again, an efficiently managed national sports federation is unexpectedly collapsing like a fragile house of cards, leaving numerous individuals questioning the underlying causes.

The Uganda Cricket Association is currently enduring one of its most arduous periods, as several key personnel have abruptly resigned from their prominent positions within the past 72 hours.

The first to tender his resignation was the CEO, Alan Mugume, who cited personal reasons, followed by the board Chairman, Nuwagaba Michael, who similarly cited personal reasons for his departure.

Two other members of the UCA, board member Alvin Mboijana and the association accountant, have also submitted their resignations, albeit under unclear circumstances.

UCA, Cricket Cranes, Victoria Pearls shine

Up until July 2023, the association had been functioning smoothly; just in June, the Cricket Cranes astounded cricket enthusiasts by triumphing in the inaugural T20 Champions Cup held in Nairobi.

Brian Masaba's team displayed immense resilience, bouncing back from a precarious 5-4 score after 3.2 overs to achieve a commendable 125 all out within the allotted overs. Miraculously, they managed to thwart Kenya's pursuit on the final ball.

In May, the Victoria Pearls emerged victorious in the Quadrangular Series held in Namibia, a few weeks after their triumph in the Victoria Series on home soil.

Notably, the local cricket governing body not only witnessed success from their national teams but also gained recognition from the International Cricket Council at the ICC Development Awards.

UCA received the prestigious ICC Digital Fan Engagement of the Year award, acknowledging Uganda's innovative methods of promoting young players, effectively engaging with cricket enthusiasts across the nation, and raising awareness of the sport.

The division within the association seems to have stemmed from the contractual situation of Laurence Mahatlane, head coach of the Cricket Cranes.

Mahatlane divides UCA

Pulse Sports has learned that the board was divided over Mahatlane's contract renewal, with the majority opposing his reappointment, primarily due to his failure to secure Uganda ODI status.

However, matters were further complicated by the public outcry, particularly from former Cricket Cranes players and administrators who questioned the board's skepticism regarding Mahatlane's contract renewal, considering his accomplishments since joining in 2020.

In an interview with Pulse Sports in August, Mahatlane revealed that he was solely focused on managing the team's day-to-day affairs, leaving his agency in charge of handling his contract situation, which is set to expire in October 2023.

With Chairman Michael Nuwagaba providing the association with a 30-day notice period, the question of who will assume the mantle remains unanswered. Meanwhile, UCA is preparing to commence the recruitment process for a new head coach and CEO by next Monday.

Numerous unresolved issues persist, but restoring order within the association is of paramount importance. Additionally, the Cricket Cranes and the Victoria Pearls are gearing up for the T20 World Cup qualifiers in November.
