Cricket Cranes head coach Lawrence Mahatlane has praised the Uganda Cricket Association for the significant step taken in awarding the Victoria Pearls, Uganda's Women's cricket team contracts.
The development, confirmed on Women's day (8th March), saw 12 Victoria Pearls' players awarded contracts which will be reviewed every four months.
"It's massive, really is an exciting thing for Ugandan cricket; the same principle which applies to the men, now it's about them being cricketers and training every day of the week," he told Pulse Sports.
"There will not be a situation where we summon players on short notice before the tournament."
"With contracts now, players can prepare better, and in turn, we shall start seeing the team's steady progress through results," Mahatlane added.
The 12 contracted players were categorized into A and B groups based on their performances last year.
As a result, category A had seven players, while Category B had five players.
Mahatlane now hopes that both national teams play as often in several tournaments for new talent to be unearthed.
"Hopefully, the ladies and men play six to seven tournaments a year," he noted before adding.
"Then we can get to a space where with time, we have more youngsters coming through like Juma Miyagi and Pascal Murungi."
The Victoria Pearls are preparing for several series in 2023, the Victoria Series at home, the annual Kwibuka Tournament in Rwanda, and the T20 World Cup Qualifiers in South Africa.
