The Cricket Cranes are set to return to action at the East Africa Twenty-20 Cup in Kigali, with head coach Laurence Mahatlane having named his team.

The 14-man squad, however, misses a familiar name in veteran bowler Francis 'Franco' Nsubuga, who, for the first time since 2021, has been omitted from the team for unspecified reasons.

Pulse Sports, however, reliably understands that dropping the off-spin bowler was to allow him to rest as the Cricket Cranes are set to defend the Africa Cup in South Africa after Rwanda.

"Franco was simply rested, along with Riazat and Dinesh, because the side has another tournament after Rwanda, and they need them fresh," a source that preferred anonymity exclusively told Pulse Sports.

Nsubuga, 42, is the longest-serving cricketer in Ugandan Cricket history, having made his debut 29 years ago, going on to make over 50 appearances in both the twenty-20 and 50-over formats.

Uganda hopes to defend their T20 East Africa Cup in the three-nation tourney, including hosts Rwanda and Tanzania.

Head coach Laurence Mahatlane has already emphasised the tournament's importance, stressing that it will be used to prepare the team for the upcoming ICC Twenty 20 regional world cup qualifiers come November 2023.

Ronak Patel leads the returnees to the squad alongside Roger Mukasa and Siraje Nsubuga, who both missed the Namibia Castle Lite series. At the same time, David Wabwire, a debutant, also makes the team.

Brothers Henry Ssenyondo and Simon Ssesazi also return to the side following a family bereavement, while Robinson Obuya, Riazat Ali Shah, Juma Miyagi, Cosmas Kyewuta and Dinesh Nakrani miss out.

The team is set to travel to Rwanda on Friday.
