As Mamelodi Sundowns prepare to celebrate winning a sixth straight league title and sixteenth overall, goalkeeper Denis Masinde Onyango will pick up a record-extending 10th PSL title.
Masandawana were confirmed as league champions without being in league action on Saturday after second-placed Supersport United and Kaizer Chiefs failed to pick up maximum points over the weekend.
This meant that after 24 rounds of matches, Sundowns, who are 19 points above the chasing and with a game in hand, are champions for the sixth straight time, waiting for the coronation ceremony.
Of all the ten titles Onyango has won, it's safe to say that this has probably been the toughest in his career, having fallen down the pecking order in goal at Sundowns.
The arrival of Ronwen Williams at the start of the season turned the tables at Chrkloop as the Bafana Bafana captain was immediately thrown into the deep end.
Williams has managed 28 starts across all competitions compared to Onyango’s five, including the CAF Champions League, where Onyango had been expected to lead Rhulani Mokwena’s charges.
‘Onyiso’ as he is fondly known, won three league titles at Supersport United before adding seven with Sundowns.
He has also won the CAF Champions League, the CAF Super Cup, three Nedbank Cup titles, one MTN 8 title and two Telkom Cup titles.
Onyango has also won the PSL goalkeeper of the season twice in the 2015/16 and 2021/22 seasons.
