Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga is among African players plying their trade in Qatar and he also ranks highly when it comes to those earning big money in the Gulf nation.

Qatar has become a favourite destination for most players in recent years thanks to the big money offered by clubs from the Middle East nation.

Players from South America and Europe are now moving to Qatar and Africans have also embraced the country as a place where they can enjoy their careers and also make good money.

Percy Tau

South African forward Percy Tau joined Qatar SC in January after falling out with Egyptian giants Al Ahly and saw his salary improve massively.

Tau, who was earning $100,000 (Ksh13 million) per month at Al Ahly signed a bumper deal that saw his salary improve to $920,000 (Ksh118 million) monthly in Qatar, as per GOAL.

It means in his six-month contract, Tau will earn $5.5 million (Ksh706 million) in Qatar, with the deal having an option to extend by a year if the club avoids relegation.

Michael Olunga’s Al Duhail team-mate is among the highest earning African players in the Qatar Stars League after joining them in the midseason transfer window.

Ziyech ditched Turkish giants Galatasaray, where he was earning €3 million per year, for a much-improved contract in Doha where he is on a reported annual salary of between €3.5 million (Ksh491 million) and €5 million (Ksh561 million) in annual salary.

The Moroccan signed a six-month deal with the option for an extra year at the end of the current season.

According to Salary Sport, Senegal right-back Abdou Diallo earns £44,000 (Ksh7.3 million) per week, translating to £2,288,000 (Ksh382 million) per year playing for Al-Arabi Sports Club.

Diallo left French giants Paris Saint-Germain in August 2023 for Al-Arabi, where he signed a three-year contract until May 31, 2026.

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga has been with Doha-based giants Al Duhail since January 2021, making history as the club’s all-time top scorer along the way, while winning numerous trophies.

For his heroics and importance to the club, Olunga is rewarded handsomely with an estimated annual salary of $1.95 million (Ksh250 million).

Yacine Brahimi

Algerian dribbling winger Yacine Brahimi is another big name in Qatar as he plays for Al-Gharafa, where he has been since June 2022.

The forward is in the last year of his contract and is estimated to be earning over €1.5 million (Ksh210 million) annually in salary and bonuses.

Brahimi continues to score goals, although his tally has reduced this season, as he has just five in the league with Al-Gharafa pushing for the title; being three points behind leaders Al-Sadd and one adrift of Olunga’s Al Duhail.
