5000 fans watch as Kano Pillars and Kwankwasiya battle in Nigeria's 3rd Division

The Kano derby between Kano Pillars and Kwankwasiya was a spectacle with no a packed crowd at the Sani Abacha Stadium.

Kano Pillars juniors escaped defeat in the NLO opener after salvaging a point against rivals Kwankwasiya in Kano on Wednesday.

A packed crow watched the entertaining encounter as Pillars came from behind to share the spoils following a 1-1 draw against city rivals Kwankwasiya at the Sani Abacha Stadium.

No fewer than 5000 spectators were in the Stadium to witness the Kano-based teams go head-to-head on the first day of the 2023 season in Nigeria’s third division, NLO.

Pillars survive Kwankwasiya

The match at the Kofarmata in Kano was highly anticipated, with at least 5000 fans in the stadium to watch the local derby.

After a goalless opening first half, the visitors Kwankwasiya shocked the home fans when they took the lead through a Nafiu Shuaibu penalty in the 53rd minute.

But the goal lasted just 10 minutes as Pillars equalised through a good move finished by Auwalu Abdullah.

The Kano derby between Kano Pillars and Kwankwasiya ended in a draw.

The host nearly took the lead 19 minutes from time but were denied by a wonderful save from Kwankwasiya’s goalkeeper Emmanuel Richard.

In the end, a share of the spoils for both teams to kick off what is set to be a long campaign for them as they look to gain promotion to the NNL.
