7 Highest paid African-based footballers: Does Yanga’s Aziz Ki rank anywhere?

African football is becoming lucrative every year with clubs around the continent offering competitive salaries and here are some of the highest paid African-based players.

African leagues are increasingly becoming among the most lucrative to play in with a number of players crossing borders to have a piece of the cake.

Now, players can live comfortably by playing in certain leagues in Africa without the allure of the riches of European football.

However, not all leagues are as lucrative, although clubs from North and South Africa have become favourite destinations for players looking for big-money contracts on the continent.

7. Mohamed El Shenawy (Al Ahly)

Starting the list of the seven highest paid African-based footballers is Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy.

Mohamed El Shenawy, who is also Egypt’s No.1, honed his career at Al Ahly and takes home $864,000 (Ksh111.6 million) annually which translates to $72,000 (Ksh9.3 million) per month, $16,615 (Ksh2.146 million) weekly and $3,323 (Ksh429,331) daily, as per Pay Wizard.

6. Abdallah El-Said (Zamalek)

Egyptian midfielder Abdallah El-Said also makes the list of the highest earning African-based footballers with a salary of over $867,000 (Ksh112 million) per year.

Abdallah El-Said left Pyramids to join Zamalek this season and it looks to have been a great decision as he has so far scored six goals and provided four assists from midfield in 28 games.

5. Aliou Dieng (Al Ahly)

Malian defensive midfielder Aliou Dieng also makes the list of African-based footballers with an annual pay of $900,000 (Ksh116 million).

However, the 27-year-old is currently on loan at Al-Kholood in Saudi Arabia but it is believed the two clubs share the responsibility of paying him. Dieng has so far featured in 25 matches and managed two goals in 2024-25.

4. Hussein El Shahat (Al Ahly)

Al Ahly’s other representative on the list is left-winger Hussein El Shahat who pockets $1 million (Ksh129 million) per year.

The forward has managed six goals and three assists in 28 games this season and the Egyptian giants will be expecting more as they seek to defend their CAF Champions League and Premier League titles this term as they pay over $83,000 (Ksh10.7 million) to him per month.

3. Mohamed Awad (Zamalek)

Zamalek goalkeeper Mohamed Awad is also on the list of the highest earning African-based footballers with an annual wage of $1 million (Ksh129 million).

Mohamed Awad, who has played 24 matches this season, also takes home around $83,000 (Ksh10.7 million) monthly at Zamalek who are looking to defend their CAF Confederation Cup this term.

2. Ramadan Sobhi (Pyramids)

Another Egyptian club on the list, Pyramid forward Ramadan Sobhi is the second highest earning player based in Africa on an annual salary of $1.446 million (Ksh187 million).

The former Stoke City and Huddersfield town player also pockets over $100,000 (Ksh13 million) in monthly salary at the big-spending Pyramids but for all that outlay, he only has two goals and six assists so far this season.

Tunisian left-back Ali Maaloul is believed to be the highest paid footballer based in Africa on an annual salary of $1.5 million (Ksh194 million), according to Tunisienumerique.

The defender players for Egyptian giants Al Ahly, who are the highest paying club on the continent, given players from the team make up most of those on the list.

Ali Maaloul takes home over $100,000 (Ksh13 million) per month in salary and bonuses which takes his annual pay to the staggering sum.
