The Nigerian forward was pivotal as his side dismantled Genoa on home soil.

Atalanta have now scored in each of their last 19 home games in Serie A, a record in their history.

It has been a stop-start season for the reigning Europa League champions who had won just three games in nine across all competitions this season prior to the game against Genoa, and had not recorded back-to-back victories.

However, La Dea eventually put that to bed, picking up a 4-0 victory over Genoa, on the back of their comprehensive 3-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday

How it happened

The hosts started the game on the front foot, with Ademola Lookman going close with a shot as early as the sixth minute.

However, they eventually took the lead in the 24th minute with Lookman playing an important role by playing a lovely long pass which found the unmarked Mateo Retegui inside the box and he slotted it into the right bottom corner.

Lookman continued to threaten as he came close to scoring just past the half-hour mark,  but he shot straight at Genoa goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini.

While Lookman kept edging close without fruition, it was Retegui that scored his and the team’s second of the game, finishing from a rebound in the 50th minute.

Retegui then turned provider on the hour mark, playing a lovely pass into Ederson who matched it with a fine finish, before stepping up to complete his hat trick from the spot on the 74th minute mark.

It became a matter of how many goals that Atalanta would score, as Marten de Roon made it five in the 80th minute with a first-time shot from the edge of the box.

However, Genoa eventually found some respite with Jeff Ekhator slotting home in the 83rd minute from a cut back to reduce the deficit.
