Dortmund go level on point at the top of the Bundesliga with victory against Hertha Berlin.
Karim Adeyemi scored first as Borussia Dortmund made a statement victory in the title race, defeating Hertha Berlin 4-1 with two goals in each half.
Dortmund hosted Hertha at the Signal Iduna Park as they looked to capitalise on Bayern Munich's slip. The hosts rose to the occasion, soundly beating their lacklustre visitors.
Karim Adeyemi fired up the Yellow Wall with a strike in the 27th minute of the game before Donyell Malen doubled the hosts' advantage in the 31st minute. Adeyemi was substituted in the 35th minute due to injury, and Dortmund were dealt another blow in the 46th minute when Lucas Tousart scored to pull one back for Hertha.
Dortmund brought on the big guns in Jude Bellingham and Sebastien Haller in the 66th minute, and they increased their lead by two again in the 76th minute before Julian Brandt capped off the scoring in the 90th minute.
The victory takes Dortmund level on point with Bayern and Union Berlin at the top of the Bundesliga, while Hertha Berlin missed a chance to pull themselves out of the relegation places.
How it happened
Dortmund started with purpose, but were open at the back, conceding two good chances early on. The hosts managed to steady the ship dominating proceedings and put themselves in front when Marco Reus fired across goal before Adeyemi intercepted the ball and redirected it beating Oliver Christensen in goal for the visitors.
It became two for Dortmund soon enough when Adeyemi put Malen through on goal, however, the action of creating the goal saw the 21-year-old hurt himself, and he was immediately substituted. Hertha started the second-half with drive and were rewarded with a goal almost immediately when Tousart connected with a Suat Serdar cross.
Dortmund's brought in their ace Jude Bellingham and his presence put Dortmund back in the driving seat. The newfound control aided Dortmund's press for a bigger scoreline which they eventually got when Marco Reus delivered a peach of the freekick into the back of the net. Julian Brandt rounded up the scoring putting the final input on a Jamie Bynoe-Gittens delivery.
Adeyemi's injury
Karim Adeyemi scored a brilliant solo goal against Chelsea in the Champions League, leading to numerous compliments on his physical prowess, but the Germany international has occasionally struggled with injuries.
He picked up another injury, and if his reaction after he hurt himself is to be considered, he could be out for a long time. Already his involvement in the second leg against Chelsea in three weeks is in doubt, and his absence would be a big loss for Dortmund.
