Former Kenyan International's Kilimani Talent Development Center ignites hope in Western Kenya

Francis Xavier, a name etched in the annals of Kenyan football history, has taken a remarkable step towards giving back to the community that molded him into the sport's icon he is today.

With an unwavering commitment to his roots, Xavier has launched the Kilimani Talent Development Center, a transformative project aimed at nurturing young football enthusiasts in Western Kenya.

The former Kenya international and current coach of the National Super League (NSL) side Mara Sugar FC has initiated a unique endeavor that seeks to cultivate the talents of boys aged 9 to 14 years.

The project, named after the locale that played a significant role in shaping Xavier's own football journey, aims to provide guidance and mentorship to budding athletes.

"I have come up with this project through support from my friends because of the trust that they have in me," Xavier explained in an interview with Pulse Sports underlining the collaborative effort that fuels his initiative.

"This project is for children between the ages of 9 and 14 years," he emphasized, underscoring the crucial period of a child's development when they start forming aspirations and life choices.

Having been steeped in the world of coaching, Xavier acknowledges the formative impact this age range holds.

"In my training as a coach, we were taught how to manage children. At this tender age, a child starts to decide on what to do in life," he noted, highlighting the significance of providing positive guidance during this crucial phase.

"Football changes lives," Xavier proclaimed with conviction.

The gaffer has kicked off the project with a focus on boys, with plans to soon integrate girls into the program as well.

However he is clear about the project's ethos: "Everyone should know that this is voluntary work and no one is being paid in this project. In case we get a sponsor, it is for the community to benefit."

Reflecting on his own trajectory, Xavier's journey to prominence began during his teenage years.

Hailing from St Peter’s (Mumias Boys Boarding School) Xavier's football brilliance emerged in Grade 8.

He later joined St. Peter's High School, where he was chosen to represent Western Province in the Panasonic tournament held in Nairobi. Despite his modest stature, Xavier's talent stood out.

Transitioning from the grassroots, he joined Shabana FC, and his journey through Kenyan football took flight.

He later played for Eldoret KCC in 1996, making a significant impact in the team. In 2001, he joined AFC Leopards, donning the national team colors under the guidance of James Sianga, contributing to the team's triumph in the Castle Lager Cup tournament.

Beyond his playing days, Xavier continued to leave an indelible mark in the sport. As AFC Leopards' Team Manager, he played a pivotal role in securing the Shield Cup in 2013.

His coaching journey led him to Wazito FC and later Vihiga United, where he contributed to the team's qualification for the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) in 2017.

Now, Xavier is poised to make a mark on the lives of young talents, just as his mentors did for him.
