AFC Leopards: Why Ingwe could lose cherished team bus for just Ksh300,000

AFC Leopards face the prospect of losing the club’s cherished team bus for just Ksh300,000 unless they find a quick solution with one of their former players.

AFC Leopards stand the risk of losing their team bus for as low as Ksh300,000 after losing a case that sought to stop the auction of some of the club’s key assets.

Leopards found themselves in trouble when former player Robert Mudenyu attached the bus alongside other key assets for auction in a bid to recover money owed to him by the club in September.

Mudenyu is seeking to recover Ksh991,000 awarded to him by the Sports Disputes Tribunal in December 2023 over unlawful termination of his contract and with Ingwe not paying up, he wants the club’s assets sold to get his money.

The Leopards’ team bus is among assets that the defender is seeking to auction, the others being tables, computers, desks and other movable items.

However, Ingwe went to court and filed an application seeking to stop the process as they claimed the Sports Tribunal lacked jurisdiction to issue such orders but Senior Resident Magistrate S.K. Onjoro has dismissed their plea, paving the way for the auction to proceed.

It means the bus, donated to Leopards by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, now risks being auctioned at a throw away price unless Ingwe settle matters with the player as it has been listed for just Ksh300,000 on the seizure order delivered by Betico auctioneers on September 3.

Other items listed on the order are; dispensers (Ksh9,500), computers (Ksh3,000), desks (Ksh3,000), chairs (Ksh2,000) and coffee tables (Ksh2,000).

The auctioneers attempted to take away the bus in September but faced resistance from a section of Leopards fans, forcing them to abandon their mission.

Mudenyu left Leopards before the start of the 2023-24 season, having joined the club in August 2019, but he had outstanding payment that he sought to be paid without success.

With Sofapaka and Gor Mahia, who had their team buses auctioned for Ksh1 million in May this year and March 2023 respectively, Leopards could also watch their key asset slip away in an embarrassing fashion if the club leadership does not sort out the issue quickly.
