Meanwhile, Algeria, who are on two points, will also be keen on victory if they are to stand any chance of making the Round of 16.

Angola registered their first victory at the ongoing 2023 African Cup of Nations, beating Mauritania 3-2 in a highly entertaining encounter at the Stade de la Paix, Bouake, on Saturday.

The result also marked their first win at the AFCON finals since the 2012 edition, which was clinched by Zambia.

The game burst into life around the half-hour mark as Angola broke the deadlock off Gelson Dala’s expertly taken scissor-kick.

Sidi Bouna Amar then found the leveller in the 43rd minute, as he ran exquisitely with the ball through a crowd of defenders before striking hard into the top corner.

Five minutes after restart, Dala once again got his name onto the scoresheet with another smart strike.

That was three minutes before Gilberto seemingly took the game away from Mauritania with another superb finish.

Five minutes later, Aboubakary Koita got Mauritania back into the game with a stunning long-range strike that flew into the top corner.

The victory sends Angola top of Group D at the expense of Burkina Faso, with the Black Antelopes knowing a victory over Hubert Velud's side in their final group game will secure a first appearance in the knockout stages since 2010.

On the other, the defeat now leaves Mauritania on the verge of being unable to progress, with only a victory enough to save them from finishing last, as they take on Algeria on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Algeria, who are on two points, will also be keen on victory if they are to stand any chance of making the Round of 16.
