Angry Ghana supporters accosted the Black Stars at their team hotel following a disappointing loss to Cape Verde in their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations opening match
Angry Ghana fans accosted the team following their nation’s 2-1 loss to Cape Verde in their opening match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Black Stars suffered heartache in the second minute of injury time after a defensive mix-up allowed Cape Verde's Garry Rodrigues to slide the ball past Ghana goalkeeper Richard Ofori in to seal the victory.
Jamiro Monteiro tapped into an empty net after Ofori palmed Jovane Cabral’s fierce first-time effort into the goal scorer’s path.

AFCON 2023: Chris Hughton - Ghana's coach still mourning disappointing defeat to Cape Verde
And head coach Chris Hughton was left in shock and disappointed for letting the country down.
Within 15 minutes of the restart, Jordan Ayew swung in a corner that Alexander Djiku bundled into the bottom corner to restore parity but they would pay a price late in the game when Rodrigues scored the winner for Cape Verde.
Following the defeat, disappointed and angry Black Stars supporters followed the team to their hotel and accosted them in a bid to find out answers with coach Chris Hughton reported to have been attacked.
A clip has emerged online showing fans inside the Stade Félix Houphouët Boigny in Abidjan venting their frustrations at the result while gesticulating in anger.
“One member of the Ghanaian supporters in Abidjan has been arrested for an attack on coach Chris Hughton at the team's hotel,” Ghanaian journalist Saddick Adams wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
“It took the intervention of some Ghanaian diplomats who were around to save the coach. The unidentified man has been handed to the Ivorian Police.
Former Brighton coach Hughton took over as Ghana coach in March 2023 after spending a year as the team's technical director but he has had mixed fortunes in his short rein.
Not only does this result mean they have won just one of their last eight AFCON matches, their title-tilt is already in danger as they next face a tough fixture against seven-time winners Egypt.
Cape Verde, meanwhile, will now be confident of reaching the knockout stages, just like they did in 2013 and 2021.
