AFCON 2023: CAF suspend Senegal star Krépin Diatta owing to corruption slur

Senegal's woes at 2023 AFCON continue to unravel days after curtains came down on the event.

Senegal star Krépin Diatta has faced disciplinary action from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) after making corruption accusations against the football governing body.

The 24-year-old midfielder's remarks came in the wake of Senegal's elimination from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following a dramatic penalty shootout loss to Ivory Coast.

According to Zim Eye, Diatta has been handed a four-match suspension, with two of those matches suspended, meaning he will miss Senegal's next two official matches.

Additionally, the player has been fined USD $10,000 (equivalent to Ksh 1,415,078.00) for his comments.

His sanction comes after expressing dissatisfaction with the officiating during Senegal's Round of 16 match, where the Teranga Lions were dethroned as defending champions in a tense encounter against the tournament hosts.

The match ended in a 5-4 penalty shootout defeat for Senegal after both teams were locked at 1-1 at the end of regulation time.

Senegal had initially taken the lead through Habib Diallo, but a late penalty converted by Ivory Coast's Franck Kessié forced the game into penalties.

Diatta's frustrations boiled over in the mixed zone where he did not hold back his feelings.

"You’ve killed us, you’re corrupt! Keep your African Cup! You go and consult VAR to give them a penalty, but a guy (Sarr) runs 40 metres, overlaps, breaks into the box and you can’t go and look at the VAR. I’m sorry, but it’s ridiculous. I’m really sorry, but they’ve killed our competition there," said Diatta.

The Senegalese midfielder was particularly incensed by the decision not to review a potential penalty incident involving teammate Ismaïla Sarr and Ivory Coast defender Odilon Kossounou.

Senegal's quest to retain their AFCON title was thus halted in the Round of 16, marking a disappointing end to their campaign.

Under the guidance of coach Aliou Cissé, the team had harbored hopes of defending their crown but now faces the challenge of moving forward without one of their key players for the next couple of international matches.
