AFCON 2023: Kenneth Omeruo cautions against complacency ahead of clash against Guinea-Bissau

Stephen Oladehinde 16:33 - 22.01.2024

In a significant nod to his expected role in Nigeria's crucial clash against Guinea-Bissau at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Kenneth Omeruo joined manager Jose Peseiro for the pre-match press conference on Sunday.

Omeruo's presence is a clear hint that the central defender will play a key part in the upcoming match.

Omeruo's Vast AFCON Experience

As a player with the most AFCON appearances in the current Nigerian squad, the Kasimpasa ace's involvement is highly anticipated.

His sixteenth AFCON appearance came as a substitute in Nigeria's tight 1-0 victory over Ivory Coast. Omeruo's experience and calm under pressure are invaluable assets for the Super Eagles as they navigate through the tournament.

No Room for Complacency

Despite Guinea-Bissau's consecutive losses in the tournament, Omeruo cautioned his teammates against underestimating their opponent.

His remarks underline the unpredictable nature of the competition. "I think it's going to be an interesting game because they are a team we are familiar with.

"Some people said it was going to be an easy game but there's no easy game now especially in this tournament," he said as reported by Allnigeriasoccer

Omeruo emphasized the need for seriousness and focus, reflecting on the struggles faced by top African teams in the tournament.

His insights are particularly resonant considering Nigeria's unexpected exit in the round of 16 at the last AFCON, despite a strong group stage performance.

"If we go into the game thinking we're going to beat them there might be a surprise. We've been working hard, we've watched and analyzed the team. We know how they play, we know their strengths and we're working towards that in training," Omeruo added.
