Nigeria surpass AFCON 2023 expectations

Going into the tournament, nobody gave Nigeria a chance, with many predicting an early exit for Jose Peseiro’s men.

However, the three-time African champions proved many critics wrong and exceeded all expectations by reaching the final.

The Super Eagles came close to making it four AFCON titles but ultimately came up short in the final, losing 2-1 to hosts Ivory Coast.

Nigeria looked to be on course after William Troost-Ekong put the team ahead with a brilliant header in the first half.

However, goals from Franck Kessie and Sebastien Haller turned the tie around for the hosts, leaving Nigeria disappointed.

But despite the disappointment, the Super Eagles arrived to a heroic welcome on their return to the country.

The team arrived in Nigeria in the late hours of Monday night, accompanied by the Minister of Sports Development, John Owan Enoh.

Dressed in a green native as opposed to the white they wore on their trip to Cote d’Ivoire, the team was received by supporters at the airport, singing their praises.

Although they failed to win the trophy, the team is expected to meet President Bola Ahmed Tinubu before the players jet back to their respective clubs.

Nigeria will return to action next month when they take on the world champions Argentina in an international friendly.
