The Salim Babu-coached U20 Kenyan national Football team Rising Stars are gearing up showdown in 2025 U20 AFCON in Ivory Coast.

The Kenya U20 national football team, the Rising Stars, are gearing up for a major test as they prepare to compete in the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.

Drawn in Group C alongside Senegal, Zambia, and Sierra Leone, following the official AFCON U20 draw, held on February 13, the young stars will be looking to make their mark on the continental stage.

The tournament will kick off on April 26, with hosts Ivory Coast taking on Ghana in the opening match.

Kenya, however, will begin their campaign a few days later on May 1, facing Sierra Leone at Bouake Stadium.

Their journey continues on May 4, when they take on Zambia, before closing out the group stage against Senegal on May 7.

With only two teams from each group guaranteed a place in the quarter-finals, along with the two best third-placed teams, every match will be crucial for Kenya's hopes of progressing.

The 2025 AFCON U20 tournament features 13 teams vying for continental glory and a ticket to the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile later this year.

Beyond the hunt for the AFCON title, the four semi-finalists will automatically qualify for the U-20 World Cup.

The Rising Stars have been in training camp since February 28 under head coach Salim Babu.

The former Kenya Police FC tactician led the team to a runner-up finish in the 2024 U20 CECAFA tournament, which doubled as qualifiers for AFCON U20. Kenya fell short in the final, losing 2-1 to Tanzania, but still secured a spot in Ivory Coast.

Babu who is expected to announce his final squad in the coming month has previously expressed optimism to secure a historic world cup qualification.

“We have drafted over 40 players from Nairobi, but we are yet to call up players from teams like Shabana, Bandari, and other regions. We are assessing players in bits.” stated Babu on February 28 as reported by Pulse Sports following the naming of his preliminary squad.

With weeks of preparation under their belts, the squad is expected to be in peak form by the time they take on Sierra Leone in their opening fixture.

Babu will be hoping his young charges can rise to the occasion and secure a historic qualification for the U-20 World Cup.
