Tactician effectively concedes defeat to regional opponents in cutthroat industry.

Gor Mahia head coach Johnathan McKinstry has opened up about the challenges the club faces in attracting foreign players during the current transfer window.

As the transfer window opened on January 8 and will run until February 8, 2024, fans and pundits are eagerly awaiting news of potential recruits for the club.

Gor Mahia has been a dominant force in Kenyan football, maintaining an impeccable unbeaten record this season and sitting comfortably at the top of the table after 17 games.

However, McKinstry has shed light on the evolving landscape of Kenyan football and the increased competition for talent from neighboring countries.

"Kenyan football has changed a lot, obviously. We know Gor went through a drought period which we managed to rectify last season and this season," McKinstry explained.

The former Rwanda and Uganda national team head coach acknowledges that in the past, there was a significant gap between Gor Mahia and other teams in terms of resources and talent recruitment.

To illustrate the current competitive scenario, he shared an example: "I was talking to a Ugandan player about potentially joining us at the end of the season, and he is currently playing in Uganda. But he has received offers from Rwanda for a close USD 5000 (800,000) and an offer from Tanzania at close to USD 8000 (Ksh 1.2million)," McKinstry added.

The coach emphasized the financial challenges the club faces, saying, "So we simply can't compete in the market if you think of the days we were able to sign the likes of Meddie Kagere and Jacques Tuyisenge. If that was today, we couldn't afford them."

Gor Mahia currently boasts a roster of foreign players, including Ugandan striker Patrick Kaddu, Rogers Mugisha, Rwandan defender Emery Bayisenge, and striker Patrick Sibomana.

However, the hurdles in recruiting new talents have forced the club to reassess their approach to the transfer market.

Despite these challenges, Gor Mahia remains determined to defend their title and stay at the top of the table.

Their next match against Kariobangi Sharks promises to be an exciting encounter as they look to maintain their unbeaten streak and continue their pursuit for 21st FKF Premier League title.
