This move brought together two rival clubs and triggered a storm of reactions, particularly from KCCA FC fans who felt betrayed by Okello's decision to join Vipers.
In a surprising twist on Uganda's football transfer deadline day, six-time Uganda Premier League champions Vipers SC announced the signing of creative midfield talent Allan Okello on a four-year deal as a free agent.
This move brought together two rival clubs and triggered a storm of reactions, particularly from KCCA FC fans who felt betrayed by Okello's decision to join Vipers.
@Hajsuda didn't mince words, deeming Okello's transfer futile: "You're all wasting your time, Allan Okello. KCCA FC is the real deal, abo bafala. Ogenda kukona nze nkubulira."
@braveallan, a Villa fan, conveyed his disappointment and even revoked Okello's role model status: "Allan, I loved you as a Villa fan. I viewed you as my role model. Even though you never played for Villa, you inspired me.
However, I can no longer view you as my role model after this tweet. You broke my heart. If you don't delete this tweet, I will unfollow you."
@hillarysiara also expressed disillusionment but extended his best wishes: "I hope you perform well over there, but I'm so disappointed you chose them over us."
Toni Kamau drew a parallel between Okello's transfer and the famous move of former Netherlands international Robin Van Persie from Arsenal to Manchester United in 2012: "This feels like Van Persie to Man United – Kamau."
Experienced sportscaster John Vianney Nsimbe likened Okello's transfer to that of former Kenyan international Maurice Sunguti, who switched from SC Villa to Express FC, dubbing it one of the most controversial transfers: "The Allan Okello transfer to Vipers from KCCA FC is arguably the most controversial since the Mubiru and Sunguti one involving Villa and Express FC.
That time could have descended into a war between those fans; one moment they were joyful or crying, then it turned."
Allan Okello's football journey began within the KCCA FC youth system in 2016 alongside fellow talents like Mustapha Kizza, Julius Poloto, Filbert Obenchan, Ali Mwerusi, and Noel Nasasria.
They all ascended to the senior side, with Okello making his debut in 2017 against Onduparaka FC, showcasing his prowess by scoring a hat-trick.
The left-footed Cranes international midfielder made 113 appearances for the club before embarking on a journey that took him to Paradou FC in Algeria.
He returned to Lugogo for a season-long loan, where he notched five goals and four assists in as many games.
However, his boyhood club decided not to make the move permanent, setting the stage for this contentious transfer to Vipers SC.
