Both Morocco and South Africa had more nominees in the CAF Women's Player of the Year than Nigeria's Super Falcons
Super Falcons fan favourites Rasheedat Ajibade, Michelle Alozie, and Ashleigh Plumptre have all missed out on the final nominations for the 2023 CAF Women’s Player of the Year award, despite impressive showings at the Women’s World Cup.
Super Falcons favourites missing from CAF Shortlist
The three Super Falcons stars, who were among the team’s most important and impressive players as Nigeria reached the second round of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, were nowhere to be found as CAF released the final 10-person shortlist for the Women’s Player of the Year.
Plumptre was one of the foremost players on the Super Falcons’ team during their surprising run to the second round, while Alozie and Ajibade were also key as Nigeria shocked hosts Australia in the group stages.
Despite their heroics, none of the three players was considered for the award, with Ajibade being the last one axed from the previous shortlist.
Morocco, South Africa outnumber Super Falcons’ CAF nominees
Nigerians will be placated for their absence from the final shortlist by the presence of other Super Falcons stars Asisat Oshoala and Chiamaka Nnadozie, who are both in the running for the CAF Women’s Player of the Year award.
After Nigeria’s World Cup showing, many would have expected to see more Super Falcons making the final shortlist for the Women’s Player of the Year Award, but they were outnumbered by nominations from South Africa and Morrocco.
South Africa and Morocco had three nominations each, with Nigeria getting only two representatives on the final shortlist.
