Omija was outstanding on his first start for Harambee Stars against Ivory Coast last Tuesday.

Alphonce Omija, a rising talent in Kenyan football now plying his trade in Oman, recently made headlines with his debut for the national team, Harambee Stars.

Omija played the full 90 minutes in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Ivory Coast, contributing significantly to Kenya's hard-earned 0-0 draw in Lilongwe.

Despite being deployed in a relatively unfamiliar libero role in the middle of a back three, Omija put in a very spirited performance, at times, even putting his body bravely on the line when he received a smacking to the face while attempting to head the ball away.

Omija's journey to the national team spotlight began with his standout performances at Kariobangi Sharks in Kenya, before seizing an opportunity to further develop his career in Oman with top-tier side Dhofar.

His versatility as a defensive midfielder and center-back has been pivotal throughout his career, showcasing his adaptability and commitment to excellence on the field.

The 21-year-old defender received the news of his starting role just a night before facing Ivory Coast.

"The coach told me that I would be starting on Monday night, just before the game. I was really excited. I had waited for the chance so much and I grabbed it with both hands," Omija recounted in an interview with Capital Sport.

His enthusiasm and readiness to step up to the challenge were evident as he embraced the opportunity to represent his country at the senior level for the first time.

Reflecting on his performance, Omija expressed his satisfaction with his debut.

"I felt I did really well and I am super excited to have made my debut. I have worked so hard for it and I am delighted it finally came."

His composed display at right-back, despite not being his natural position, underscored his maturity and tactical understanding, earning him praise from fans and pundits alike.

Looking ahead, Omija is determined to secure more playing time with the national team, viewing it as a crucial stepping stone towards achieving his dream of playing in top European leagues.

"I would definitely want to play more though I played out of position. I enjoyed it and if the coach wants me to play there again, I will. My target is to get more minutes and improve myself to go to the next level," Omija stated confidently.

Omija credited teamwork as instrumental in holding Ivory Coast, the reigning African champions, to a goalless draw.

Alongside defensive partners Johnstone Omurwa and Daniel Anyembe, Omija successfully neutralized the threat posed by the Ivorian attackers.

Head coach Engin Firat lauded Omija's performance, highlighting his maturity and adaptability under pressure.

"Omija showed maturity and he fitted well in my plans. That's why I gave him his first senior cap against the Ivorians,” he said as quoted on The Star.

“He performed well and even when my injured players return, he will be in my plans. He showed that he is a player for big games," Firat remarked

Despite the draw against Ivory Coast, Kenya faces a challenging path in Group F of the qualifiers, currently sitting in fourth place with five points from four matches.

With upcoming fixtures against tough opponents, including Gabon and The Gambia, Omija remains optimistic about contributing to the team's success.

Omija's debut for Harambee Stars serves as a testament to his talent and dedication, signaling a promising future ahead in both domestic and international football.

As he continues to hone his skills and gain valuable experience, all eyes will be on Omija as he aims to make a lasting impact on the Kenyan football landscape.
