Former Harambee Stars striker Bonface Ambani reflects on Kenya's loss ahead of upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Retired Harambee Stars forward and Kenyan football legend, Bonface Ambani, has offered his insights and reflections on Kenya's surprising loss to South Sudan in a Tuesday friendly.

In a match that many thought would tip in the favor of the home side, it was South Sudan that came out on top, thanks to a solo goal by Tito Okello.

Both sides seemed eager to make a mark in the clash between the two neighboring countries, and there was an atmosphere of anticipation at the stadium.

However, it was South Sudan that drew first blood, catching the Harambee Stars off-guard in the opening five minutes.

Okello, in a moment that will be replayed in highlight reels, latched onto a back pass that was undershot, missing keeper Bryne Odhiambo.

The stadium, filled with hopeful Kenyan fans, fell silent. Despite spirited attempts, the Stars were unable to equalise, and the afternoon ended with jubilation for the visiting side.

While many fans were disappointed, Ambani's reaction was more measured, offering a perspective that only a former player of his stature could provide.

"Mistakes are a part of football. The goal they scored came from a swift counter-attack. Nonetheless, it was a constructive preparatory match ahead of the upcoming qualifiers," he commented in an interview with Pulse Sports.

Ambani quickly commended the South Sudanese team for their impressive performance and emphasized the importance of the future for the Harambee Stars, especially with the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers around the corner.

“However, there's still scope for enhancement. I trust that the technical bench and the team have gleaned valuable insights as we gear up for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers,” he concluded.

The friendly match, though disheartening, served as an essential preparatory step for the more significant challenge ahead: the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The Harambee Stars are placed in Group F alongside formidable teams such as Seychelles, Burundi, Gambia, Gabon, and Côte d’Ivoire.

Given the intense competition in their group, it is crucial for the Stars to learn from their mistakes and make every opportunity count.

With the first leg of the two-legged qualifiers set between November 13th and 21st, 2023, the pressure is palpable.

The nation watches with bated breath as the team gears up, hoping for a performance that would make them proud and solidify their position in the upcoming World Cup.
