Ahead of the new Pepsi University League season, the oldest higher learning institution will be one of the 24 teams competing for the top prize, coached by Douglas Bamweyana.

Makerere University is the most recognized public university in Uganda and Africa at large, but they have also earned the title of having the most intolerant fans, especially when the referee's decisions don’t go their way.

Ahead of the new Pepsi University League season, the oldest higher learning institution will be one of the 24 teams competing for the top prize, coached by Douglas Bamweyana.

Makerere will be looking to have a flawless campaign on and off the pitch, as revealed to Pulse Sports by the head coach.

“We are prepared ahead of the new season; we are also cognizant of the fact that the other teams have prepared well and are ready to compete, but we shall be ready by kick-off time,” Bamweyana said.

Makerere University football team fans have a well-documented history of interfering with play, which most times has led to lengthy bans or docked points, but

Bamweyana suggests that it is going to take everyone to curb the vice.

“We still have to sort out a few other issues off the pitch, like the fans. It is going to take all of us (players and coaches) to make this right,” he noted.

“We need to engage them (students) and show them the repercussions of their actions. They are human, and they will understand.”

“Sometimes it takes more deliberations to agree other than keeping them away from the game,” Bamweyana mentioned.

The former Wakiso Giants and Maroons FC head coach also adds that Makerere’s target remains winning the competition.

“We are Makerere University, so the target is always the same, and that is to win, and this season won’t be any different.

Makerere University, who have only won the inaugural season since 2012, are pooled in group D alongside Muni University, Kyambogo University, and Ndejje University.

The league is set to kick off on 7th March.
