Brazilian midfielder Casemiro has revealed that he almost decided not to join Manchester United
Casemiro, the Brazilian midfield maestro, has revealed a deeply emotional moment involving Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti that nearly led him to reconsider his move to Manchester United back in August 2022.
In a candid interview with El Chiringuito de Jugones, Casemiro recounted the heartfelt exchange that left an indelible mark on him.
An Unexpected Revelation
Casemiro disclosed that he had a moment of doubt about his impending move to Manchester United, despite it being on the verge of completion. He vividly recalled the poignant encounter with Ancelotti, which occurred on a Friday afternoon in Madrid, just before finalizing the transfer.
"I haven't told this to anyone before," Casemiro revealed. "I only doubted my move to Manchester once. I remember it was a Friday afternoon and it [the transfer to United] was all but done except for my signature."
Ancelotti's Tears
Entering Ancelotti's office with the decision weighing heavily on his mind, Casemiro was taken aback by the sight that greeted him. The Real Madrid coach, visibly emotional, had tears in his eyes upon learning of Casemiro's departure. This unexpected display of emotion from Ancelotti struck a chord with the Brazilian midfielder.
"I went to speak with Ancelotti. I went into his office and he already knew. I opened the door and when I turned [towards him], Ancelotti was crying," Casemiro recalled.
A Test of Loyalty
Despite Ancelotti's evident fondness and plea for him to stay, Casemiro remained resolute in his decision. He recognized the depth of affection and support from the people at Real Madrid but affirmed his commitment to honouring his word, even in the face of emotional turmoil.
"He told me: 'Case, I don't know why I'm crying, but I'm very fond of you and I don't want you to leave.' That was the moment [I doubted]... I realized how many people loved me there. But I had already given my word, and my word is more important than anything else," Casemiro recounted.
Departing from Real Madrid at the peak of his career, Casemiro expressed no regrets about his decision. With a plethora of trophies already under his belt during his nine-year tenure at the Bernabéu, he sought new challenges and experiences. His move to Manchester United presented an opportunity for personal growth and exploration in a different league.
"I had won everything [at Madrid]," Casemiro added. "I wanted a new experience."
Embracing the New Chapter
Since his arrival at Manchester United, Casemiro has felt welcomed and appreciated by the club. Despite the emotional farewell from Real Madrid, he has embraced the opportunity to learn a new language, compete in a different league, and continue his football journey at a prestigious club like Manchester United.
"From the first day I arrived here, Manchester [United] have treated me very well," Casemiro acknowledged.
Casemiro's revelation sheds light on the profound emotional connections that exist between players and coaches in the world of football. Despite the challenges and heart-wrenching goodbyes, his unwavering commitment to his principles and the pursuit of new experiences underscores the resilience and determination of a true professional. As Casemiro forges ahead in his career at Manchester United, his journey serves as a testament to the transformative power of loyalty, courage, and personal growth.
