Mainz have suspended Anwar El Ghazi from all training and matchday activities due to a social media post related to the Israel-Palestine conflict.
El Ghazi joined Bundesliga side Mainz 05 last month on a free transfer and has barely featured since his move.
The 28-year-old has since deleted the original post and took to social media to clarify his stance, asking followers to “grasp the profound pain that the Palestinians have endured.”
El Ghazi suspended by Mainz 05
Despite that clarification, the club has suspended the ex-Aston Villa man.
An Instagram post by El Ghazi accused Israel of misusing artificial intelligence to spread misinformation about the unfolding humanitarian disaster in the region.
“The decision comes as a result of a since-deleted social media post from the 28-year-old that appeared on Sunday evening. In the post, El Ghazi took a position on the ongoing conflict in the Middle East that was deemed unacceptable by the club.”
