Southampton were stunned at home by League Two side Grimsby Town in 2-1
Grimsby Town are through to the FA Cup quarter-finals after pulling off a huge upset by defeating Premier League side Southampton at Saint Mary's Stadium.
The League Two team were not given a chance to win away to a Premier League team but they have defied all odds thanks to two penalties by Gavan Holohan.
Nigerian star Joe Aribo was a second-half substitute but could not prevent the defeat while his compatriot Paul Onuachu was not involved at all.
Southampton 1-2 Grimsby
Southampton are currently bottom of the Premier League but they were still the overwhelming favourites to beat Grimsby Town who sit 16th in English football's fourth tier.
The hosts started the game with that confidence and the gulf in class was apparent but Southampton failed to convert their chances which came back to haunt them.
Lyanco was adjudged to have handled the ball and a penalty was awarded which Holohan stepped up and fired straight down the middle of Alex McCarthy’s goal to give the Mariners a precious lead on the stroke of halftime.
The Saints needed a quick response in the second half but they failed to come out of the blocks running and were soon made to pay for it again by their opponents.
Duje Caleta-Car was the guilty party on this occasion, as his rash conduct inside the area resulted in the spot-kick, allowing Holohan to once again convert in the 50th minute to make it 2-0 to Grimsby.
The Croatian defender made amends for giving away a penalty by scoring for Southampton from close range in the 65th minute but it would prove to be a mere consolation.
Nigerian international Joe Aribo came off the bench but could not find a much-needed equaliser for the home team as they fell to a shocking defeat to the lowest-ranked team remaining in the FA Cup this season, Grimsby Town.
