Arsenal defender and England Women's captain, Leah Williamson is set to be out of action until 2024
Arsenal’s Leah Williamson has been ruled out of the 2023 FIFA World Cup after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament while playing for the Gunners against Manchester United in the FAWSL.
Arsenal defender injured against Manchester United
The England defender became yet another major injury for Arsenal after the Gunners already lost Dutch forward Viviane Miedema and English forward Beth Mead to the same injury earlier this season.
Like Mead and Miedema, Williamson, who is the captain of the England Women’s national team, will also miss the World Cup in New Zealand and Australia and is expected to be out of action until 2024.
The Club announced the player’s injury with a statement saying, “We can confirm that Leah Williamson suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in our Barclays Women’s Super League match against Manchester United on Wednesday night.
“Leah was substituted in the first half of the game at Leigh Sports Village and underwent further assessment on Thursday to determine the extent of the injury.
“Leah will now begin a period of rehabilitation and is set for an extended spell on the sidelines. She will undergo surgery in due course.
“Everyone at Arsenal will be supporting Leah closely throughout the journey ahead and we would ask that her privacy is respected at this time.”

Williamson also released a statement about her injury on Instagram saying, “Unfortunately, the World Cup and Champions League dream is over for me and everyone will think that’s the main focus, but it’s the day-to-day of what I’m about to go through that is the most draining of my thoughts.
“I had my tears and made my peace with it the night it happened and since then I have been following the steps I’m told to, in order to best help myself in the short and long term.
The defender said she would be supporting her Arsenal and England teammates through her injury, while thanking the fans for their support in her trying time
“I will still be there through thick and thin for all of my teammates and their biggest supporter,” Williamson said, before concluding, “I feel your love and support, so thank you. All I ask is for a little bit of time and space to deal with all that is to come.”
