Arsenal’s injury-time win against Everton not enough to break 20 years title drought

Arsenal sealed a late win against Everton as they end the season in second place behind League winners Manchester City.

For the first time in twenty years, the Gunners were hopeful that fortune would favour them in the season's last match.

They did their job beating Everton 2-0 but the win was not enough to break their long title drought as Man City’s win against West Ham seals their fourth title in a row for the Citizens.

As it happened

Gabriel Martinelli returned to the starting eleven to replace Saka who missed out due to injury. The England winger was withdrawn against Manchester United after suffering a knock at Old Trafford.

Everton's starting XI is unchanged from the 1-0 win over Sheffield United last weekend. Andre Gomes, who was on the bench at Goodison Park, dropped out after suffering a facial injury against the Blades.

Arsenal got the game started and looked dangerous but failed to use their chances leading to Everton getting the game's first goal.

Idrissa Gueye's free-kick took the biggest deflection from Declan Rice and flew into the far top corner.

Arsenal restarted the game and got the equaliser two minutes later. Takehiro Tomiyasu drilled home from about 16 yards out after Martin Odegaard's cutback, with the first half ending in a draw.

The second half started and Arsenal continued from where they left off but were still wasteful in front of goal.

However, they got their winning goal in injury time after Jesus won the ball in midfield, Martin Odegaard knocked it past Jordan Pickford and Havertz slammed in from close range.

The final whistle was blown but the win was not enough for the Gunners to claim their first title in 20 years.
