The game was dominated by Australia who created lots of chances but could only find the back of the net once.
A second-half goal for Edina Alves Batista was enough to get the win and secure the three points for Australia as they top the Group B table.

The Australian women began their World Cup tournament against Ireland women using a 4-4-2 formation with Caitlin Foord and Mary Fowler leading the attack.
Ireland on the other hand went with a back three with the formation appearing as 3-4-3 and Marissa Sheva, Kyra Carusa and Sinead Farrelly starting at the front.

In the 52nd minute, the Australian women were awarded a penalty by the Brazilian referee Edina Alves Batista.
Stephanie Cately, the Australian left back stood in front of the ball to take the penalty and slotted it home to give her team the lead.

The game continued with several chances being created by Australia but could not score the second goal of the game.
The referee blew the final whistle and Australia ended the game with a total of 13 shots, two on target and six off target while Ireland had just five shots, three off target and zero off target.
