Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat could soon have some competition for captain Michael Olunga as the St Mirren striker is close to making first-team return after ACL injury
Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat will soon have another striker to call upon as St Mirren forward Jonah Ayunga is nearing a return to first-team action following a long-term injury.
Ayunga has showed great progress and completed 90 minutes in a bounce game at The SMiSA Stadium on Thursday.
The 26-year-old forward has been out with injury since January when he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in a Scottish Premiership match against Motherwell.

FOOTBALL Michael Olunga finally reacts to social media critics following recent Harambee Stars profligacy
Olunga has finally responded to social media critics following his recent goalless performances for Harambee Stars ahead Harambee Stars’ clash with Gabon.
“The striker has been back in full training for just over a month and has now completed 45, 60 and 90 minutes across three bounce matches as he looks to regain match fitness,” St Mirren said on their website, while giving an update on the striker’s progress.
“It will be a welcome boost for Stephen Robinson’s side with Jonah impressing in his first half season at Saints last year – scoring seven goals in 24 appearances.”
The 26-year-old, who joined Saints from English side Morecambe in summer 2022 on an original two-year deal, extended his stay at the club until the summer of 2025 in September.

STARS ABROAD: Eight top foreign-born players that Kenyan can still turn to ahead of 2026 World Cup qualifiers
Harambee Stars are preparing for a grueling 2026 World Cup qualification campaign and there are a number of eye-catching talents born abroad that coach Engin Firat can entice.
Ayunga, who has already declared that he would like to represent Harambee Stars at the World Cup, will be hoping to show some great form when he finally makes his long-awaited return for St Mirren to earn a call-up to the Kenyan squad for the next round of qualifiers in March 2024.
Firat has had to rely on Olunga, saying there is no other striker in the country who matches his standards, but Ayunga could be the man to offer competition for the Al Duhail forward who has faced a lot of criticism lately due to his barren spell in the national team jersey.
