Tell the people why you sacked me — Outgoing Barca boss Xavi challenges Laporta
Xavi has challenged Barcelona president Joan Laporta to reveal the reasons behind his dismissal.
How it happened
The game was cagey from the jump, with both teams sizing themselves up. The dynamics soon became familiar as Barcelona started to rack up passes and, consequently, possession, while Lyon were solid defensively—while not necessarily setting up a deep block—and looking dangerous in offensive breaks.
Both teams traded chances in the first half; Delphine Cascarino and Khadidiatou Diani both got good shooting chances for Lyon, as did Salma Paralluelo for Barcelona.
However, it was not until just after the hour mark that the deadlock would be broken. Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmati darted through the central area of Lyon's defence and dribbled her marker to the left before firing across goal.
The angle of the shot would typically make for a mild difficulty save for Christiane Endler, but for a wicked deflection off Elie Carpenter that diverted the ball away from the Chilean.
Lyon fought back for an equaliser, threatening the Blaugrana goal with every set-piece opportunity they earned. They came close through Ada Hegerberg, who was a second-half substitute, but the Norwegian headed over.
Alexia Putellas, who was brought on in the second half injury time, sealed the result for Jonatan Giraldez’s men, as she fired into the roof of the net from a Claudia Pina cut back.
The Champions League win helped Barcelona complete the quadruple, as they won every possible trophy this season.
