Barcelona are faced with the prospect of starting the season handicapped after struggling to register new players due to LaLiga's financial fair play rules
LaLiga giants Barcelona could be left with 13 players or less by the time the 2023/24 league campaign kicks off on Friday, with the club among a majority of LaLiga sides that have been unable to register new signings this summer.
Barcelona face race against time to register players
Clubs in Spain face a dire situation as time is running out for them to register new signings before the start of the new LaLiga season, which is only three days away.
The impact has been felt across the league, with teams unable to work around LaLiga’s financial fair play rules and unable to add new members to their squads, including players who were signed from other clubs, players who signed new contracts, and players who were promoted from junior teams.
According to Marca, only 41 of LaLiga’s 90 new faces this summer have been registered so far, leaving teams, including Barcelona, with mere hours to complete all necessary paperwork for these players to feature in the league’s opening weekend.
LaLiga sides struggle to register players
Barcelona have failed to register any of the new faces this summer, including midfielders Ilkay Gundogan and Oriol Romeu, and thanks to departures at the club will be left with only 13 first-team players at the start of the new season if things stay the same.
They are not alone in this debacle, as clubs like Sevilla, Real Betis, and Real Sociedad, have also been unable to register star recruits, including Isco and Ibrahima Sow.
In contrast with their Catalan rivals, Real Madrid are the only club in LaLiga not to be embroiled in the chaos as they have successfully registered all summer transfers and contracts before the start of the season.
