Barcelona board of directors are reportedly angry at Xavi over his recent press conference, and are set to sack him weeks after confirming he will stay next season.

Barcelona have reportedly made a U-turn on their decision over the future of manager Xavi Hernandez and are expected to sack him at the end of the season.

The legendary retired Spanish midfielder led Barcelona to a league title last season but has done a poor job of defending it this season.

He faced internal and external pressure within the campaign, leading him to announce his resignation on January 27th.

Three months later, however, he walked back his decision after the club convinced him to stay beyond the season. President Joan Laporta and Xavi held a joint press conference to announce the decision. He spoke glowingly of Xavi during the announcement, expressing his delight, however, according to recent reports, the tune has changed; the president is angry at Xavi over his comments on the club's financial status and is contemplating sacking him.

What Xavi said

'The Culé must understand that the situation is very complicated to compete economically,” Xavi said, per the Daily Mail.

'It has nothing to do with what we had 25 years ago when the coach would come and say 'I want this one, this one, and this one'. It doesn't work like that anymore.

'I understand that and that's how we're going to adjust to it. That doesn't mean we're not going to compete. We need stability and time. There are good things to compete for. The situation we are in is the situation we are in in terms of results.

'Last year we were solvent without playing the football we would like to play and this year, we have played better but with worse results,' he added.

Xavi set to be axed

According to the Spanish publication Rac1, the Barcelona board of directors was left angry by Xavi’s statement and is now considering parting ways with him.

Per the report, Laporta wants the manager of Barcelona to be more optimistic about the club's situation; hence, the brass received Xavi's statement negatively.
