After bringing disrepute to the Blaugrana name, Spanish giants Barcelona have decided to renounce Dani Alves' status as a legend
LaLiga giants Barcelona have made the decision to strip former defender Dani Alves of his official legend status, following his recent conviction for sexual assault.
This revelation comes from Diario Sport, shedding light on the developments behind the scenes in Catalonia's capital.
Legal Proceedings and Custody
Alves, an iconic figure at Barcelona, was found guilty of sexual assault last week. The Brazilian had been in custody since January 2023 in connection to an incident in the bathroom of a nightclub in Barcelona the previous December.
The Brazilian defender was sentenced to up to four and a half years in prison for his role in the events which took place in December and could be deported to Brazil as part of his punishment.
Cautious Approach by Barcelona Leadership
Throughout Alves' legal proceedings, Barcelona's leadership approached the matter cautiously, emphasizing that a decision on his status within the club would be deferred until a verdict was reached in the trial. Last Thursday, the long-awaited verdict was delivered.
Despite Alves maintaining his innocence during the trial, the court found him guilty of sexual assault, resulting in a four-and-a-half-year prison sentence. In response, Alves's legal team expressed their intention to appeal the verdict, aiming to overturn the ruling.
Barcelona's Definitive Stance
However, Barcelona, in light of the conviction, has chosen to take a definitive stance, and according to Sport, the Blaugrana have excluded Dani Alves from the legendary status conferred on 102 footballers who have starred for the club since its foundation in 1899.
This move reflects the gravity of the situation and the club's commitment to addressing issues of misconduct and ensuring that individuals associated with Barcelona maintain a certain standard of behavior. Dani Alves, once celebrated as a legend at the club, now faces a tarnished legacy in the wake of the recent legal developments.
