Alexia Putellas wins FIFA The Best Women's Player Award
Putellas was announced as the best women's player for the year 2022 at the FIFA Awards held in the Theatre du Chatelet, Paris, France.
The award comes after a brilliant season with Barcelona, in which she led the Blaugrana to their second consecutive Champions League final, although they lost to Lyon.
Putellas’ goal-scoring rates were among the best even though she had tempo-setting and playmaking responsibilities as a midfielder.
She was the top scorer in the 2021/22 UEFA Women's Champions League campaign with eleven goals and scored 34 goals in all competitions.
The 29-year-old also led Barcelona Femeni to win all 30 league games in the Primera Division Femenina as they picked up the league and cup double.
However, she could not compete with Spain at Euro 2022 as she suffered an ACL injury at the end of the season, but FIFA's review period for the award made her eligible to win.
She beat Arsenal's Beth Mead, who won the Euros trophy and best player award with England, and San Diego Wave's Alex Morgan, who won the CONCACAF Women's Championships with the USA.
Putellas also became the first player to win the award twice, and in consecutive years as she also claimed the award for the year
