The public broadcaster's director general Tim Davie has apologized to license fee payers after a day of sports programme disruption.

The growing public back clash regarding the suspension of BBC Match of the day host Gary Lineker over criticizing Britain's controversial asylum policy has made the top hierarchy at the BBC uncomfortable.

Football shows stopped at the last minute as commentators walked out supporting Lineker.

Interviewed by BBC News, Mr Davie said, "success for me is getting Gary back on the air, and together we are giving to the audiences that world-class sports coverage which, as I say, I'm sorry we haven't been able to deliver today".

The director general said he would "absolutely not" be resigning but admitted, "this has been a tough time for the BBC".

Commenting on the Illegal Migration Bill on Tuesday, Lineker called it an "immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in the language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s".

Fellow pundits Ian Wright and Allan Shearer stood by Lineker and announced they wouldn't attend the match of the day programme on Saturday, and as a result, the show was reduced to 20 minutes.

Prime minister Rishi Sunak called Lineker a "talented presenter" in a statement on Saturday evening but added the row was not a matter for the government."

"As prime minister, I have to do what I believe is right, respecting that not everyone will always agree. That is why I have been unequivocal in my approach to stopping the boats."

Football Focus was due to air at noon but was stopped when host Alex Scott tweeted: " It doesn't feel right going ahead with the show today" an hour and a half before it was due to start.
