Former Nairobi City Stars coach Nicholas Muyoti is tipped to be McCarthy's assistant coach and will help the former Manchester United assistant coach settle in seamlessly in Kenya.

Following the exit of Turkish coach Engin Firat after he failed to qualify Harambee Stars to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, FKF have been in the market for his replacement despite naming Francis Kimanzi on an interim basis. It has been reported that Kimanzi will become the Technical Director of Harambee Stars.
FKF have managed to secure a work permit for McCarthy and his new staff, and he will be in charge when Kenya face the Gambia in their 2026 World Cup qualifying away fixture on March 17th, and against Gabon six days later at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi.
FKF expects the new Harambee Stars coach to build a good team that will be competitive in Africa and beyond. The 47-year-old will be given a free hand to select his team and he will be expected to come up with a side capable of competing well in Africa after Kenya’s failure to seal a place at the last three editions of the Africa Cup of Nations.
