Gor Mahia striker Benson Omala is out to bring FC Talanta down as K’Ogalo eye victory to maintain top spot and their unbeaten league run
Gor Mahia striker Benson Omala is keen to surpass his goal tally from last season and is aiming at scoring freely in the 2023-24 campaign.
Omala scored a record-equaling 26 league goals last season but missed out on the Golden Boot award by one goal and looks determined to claim it this term as he leads the scoring charts with eight goals after 14 games.
As Gor take on FC Talanta at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega on Sunday, Omala hopes he can get on the scoresheet and help his side return to winning ways after last week’s scare where they went down 2-0 before rescuing a 2-2 draw against Nzoia Sugar.

FOOTBALL Gor Mahia striker Chris Ochieng looking to emulate K'Ogalo's 1976 and 2015 heroics
The forward hopes K’Ogalo can maintain their unbeaten run for the entire campaign and emulate the success of the club’s teams in 1976 and 2015
“We have been working on the defence in the first 20 minutes and our attacking phase because last time, we had so many chances but only scored two goals,” said Omala.
“I like scoring goals. That is my job because if I score, my team wins so I have to continue scoring goals. Last season, I scored 26 goals, I want to surpass that. That is what motivates me.
“They [his team-mates] alway motivate me to score goals by giving me passes, they have trust in me and I do not want to let them down.”

FOOTBALL Kakamega Homeboyz coach makes stance on AFC Leopards-linked trio
Kakamega Homeboyz coach Patrick Odhiambo has given his opinion on reports linking his players Farouk Shikalo, Brian Eshihanda, and Moses Shummah to AFC Leopards.
Omala feels while Talanta, who sit ninth on the table, are a minnow to many, at least on paper, they will bring out their best game, something Gor Mahia players have come accustomed to.
“Any team playing against Gor Mahia are never an underdog, they want to push and get the result. Our games are always tough because they want to prove a point so we do not underrate any team,” added Omala.
Omala’s sentiments were echoed by club captain Philemon Otieno who feels the team is also motivated by trying to retain their title and doing it unbeaten.

FOOTBALL Shabana record biggest league victory of the season to end three-game winless run as KCB & Bandari close in on Gor Mahia
Shabana put on a stellar show to thrash Sofapaka in Homa Bay as they ended a run of three games without a win while KCB silenced Kenya Police as Bandari added to Murang’a Seal’s woes.
“The league is a marathon and as players, we will do what we can to make sure we get maximum points,” said Otieno.
“We are taking one game at a time, we have our goals that we set when the league started and I am optimistic will win the trophy at the end of the season.”
Gor Mahia are top of the table with 28 points from 14 matches but cannot afford to drop points given Kakamega Homeboyz and KCB are just a point behind, while Bandari and Posta Rangers trail them by two.
