Cancelo's loan move to Bayern Munich means he is no longer available on FPL, here are some players you can replace him with.
The Premier League transfer window has just closed, and as usual, the window came with repercussions for FPL.
Some players who have been consistent FPL point scorers this season will lose prominence as their clubs integrate new signings, while others who have been FPL royalties over the years have left the Premier League and are no longer eligible for FPL. Cancelo is one such player.
Cancelo currently has 30 per cent ownership, even after over 400,000 managers have sold him.
It is clear that many managers do not know what to do with the Portuguese, and part of that is because of how poorly premium defenders have done this season; only one player in the 15 highest-scoring defenders so far this season costs more than 6.5 million, and that player is Cancelo.
Premium defenders not performing as expected means player ownership is spread out, with nine of the top 15 highest-scoring defenders having less than 15% ownership. This means there are many defenders to jump on in your search for a Cancelo replacement; here are some of them.
Rico Lewis
Who better to replace Cancelo with than the man Pep Guardiola himself replaced him with?
As Newcastle defenders have shown this season, the worth of a defender on FPL can be about the team's strength rather than the offensive qualities of the defender. Manchester City are at the start of a predicted good run of form in a bid to defend their Premier League title, and with Cancelo out, Rico Lewis would be a more frequent member of a team expected to keep many clean sheets this season.
Valued at only 3.9 million and less than 1% ownership, there is a huge upside to be had for both points and team value.
Pedro Porro
You might want to hold off a week or two on this one as he is a new signing and might not start the first couple of games. However, Pedro Porro is someone you definitely want to keep an eye out for, FPL-wise.
The wing-back had eight goal contributions at Sporting Lisbon before moving to Spurs, and he is coming into a system that empowers wing-backs.
He is expected to be the starting wing-back for Tottenham and valued at only 5.0 million, you would have 2.0 million saved to spend on other areas in your squad.
Fabian Schar
For the second-highest scoring FPL defender this season, Fabian Schar has only 16.8% ownership.
Newcastle are the best defence in the Premier League this season, with 12 clean sheets and only 11 goals conceded in 20 games.
Schar is also a threat in the penalty area, having missed four big chances and scoring once. Valued at only 5.2 million, you should be getting Schar if you do not have him already.
Dan Burn
Burn is another option in the Newcastle defence, and has already scored 87 points this season, ranking 4th among the top-scoring defenders this season.
The Englishman would also be a differential option with only 4.0% ownership and is an inexpensive entry into Newcastle’s defence, valued at only 4.6 million.
If none of these players have convinced you, you could also consider Andrew Robertson, Sven Botman, Ben Mee, or Pervis Estupinian.
